چکیده

Observations of turbulent kinetic energy dissipation rate () from a range historical shelf seas data sets are viewed the perspective their forcing and mechanisms: barotropic to baroclinic tidal conversion, pycnocline bottom boundary layer (BBL) dissipation. The observations placed in geographical context using high resolution numerical model (NEMO AMM60) order compute relevant maps (conversion). We analyze, total, 18 shear microstructure surveys undertaken over 17 year period 1996 2013 on North West European shelf, consisting 3,717 vertical profiles microstructure: 2,013 free falling profilers 1,704 underwater gliders. A robust positive relationship is found between model-derived observed integrated . fitted power law approximately one-third found, giving simple new parameterization. discuss reasons for this apparent where “missing” may be occurring. conclude that internal wave related provides explanation consistent with commonly used fine-scale

Boundary layer dissipation and the nonlinear interaction of equatorial baroclinic and barotropic rossby waves

Two-layer equatorial primitive equations for the free troposphere in the presence of a thin atmospheric boundary layer and thermal dissipation are developed here. An asymptotic theory for the resonant nonlinear interaction of long equatorial baroclinic and barotropic Rossby waves is derived in the presence of such dissipation. In this model, a self-consistent asymptotic derivation establishes t...

Internal waves, baroclinic energy fluxes and mixing at the European shelf edge

The energy flux in internal waves generated at the Celtic Sea shelf break was estimated by (i) applying perturbation theory to a weeklong dataset from a mooring at 200m depth, and (ii) using a 2D non-hydrostatic circulation model over the shelf break. The dataset consisted of high resolution time-series of currents and vertical stratification together with two 25-h sets of vertical profiles of ...

head-discharge relationship of flumes: energy loss versus boundary layer

long-throated flumes are measurement structures often used in water and wastewater systems to determine the flow discharge. the head-discharge relationship of long-throated flumes is traditionally determined following the critical flow theory and the boundary layer concept. after a review of the traditional approach and an analysis of the approximate assumptions of the boundary layer approach, ...

Distribution of Energy Spectra, Reynolds Stresses, Turbulence Production, and Dissipation in a Tidally Driven Bottom Boundary Layer

Seven sets of 2D particle image velocimetry data obtained in the bottom boundary layer of the coastal ocean along the South Carolina and Georgia coast [at the South Atlantic Bight Synoptic Offshore Observational Network (SABSOON) site] are examined, covering the accelerating and decelerating phases of a single tidal cycle at several heights above the seabed. Additional datasets from a previous ...

Spectral particulate attenuation and particle size distribution in the bottom boundary layer of a continental shelf

Spectral attenuation and absorption coefficients of particulate matter and colocated hydrographic measurements were obtained in the Mid-Atlantic Bight during the fall of 1996 and the spring of 1997 as part of the Coastal Mixing and Optics experiment. Within the bottom boundary layer (BBL) the magnitude of the beam attenuation decreased and its spectral shape became steeper with distance from th...
